Making a gravity bong is a classic stoner arts & crafts project that everyone should try at least once. It's surprisingly easy to do, a fun way to recycle a few bottles, and a great way to smoke when you don't have a pipe or bong. Whether you left your favorite spoon pipe in your other pants or acquired some dank leaf while woefully free of good glassware, making a gravity bong is an easy way to save the night and have a great time doing it.
How do you make a gravity bong at home? My friend, it is easier than a macaroni picture frame and only slightly more dangerous. You're going to need a water bottle, a 2-liter soda bottle, a little bit of tinfoil, and something sharp. Here's the step-by-step walkthrough on making a DIY gravity bong.
What You Need to Make a Gravity Bong
- 1 EmptyWater Bottle
- Optional: with Cap
- 1 Empty 2-Liter Soda Bottle
- 1 Sharp Knife
- Box cutter, craft knife, Exacto knife, etc.
- Or sharp craft scissors
- 1 Square of Tinfoil
- 1 Thin Pokey
- Toothpick, paperclip, ballpoint, etc.
- 2-3 Cups Clean Water
- Optional: Ice Cubes
Preparing Your Bottles
- Empty water bottle
- Empty 2L bottle
- Something sharp
Start with your two empty bottles. You need one bottle slightly smaller than the other. The easiest two to get will be a normal water bottle and an empty 2L soda bottle. But you can use any two sizes of empty plastic bottle in the house **as long as they have been washed thoroughly and only ever used for potable liquids.**
So, take your larger bottle and cut the top 1/4 to 1/3 off. You want to leave most of the bottle upright but open on top. You can use an Exacto/craft/box-cutter blade if you choose or just a normal pair of scissors by folding or stabbing the plastic. Your gravity bong can be beautiful, but it doesn't have to be and the cut ends are not the part that matters for the bong's functioning.
Next, take your smaller bottle and cut off the bottom 1/2 to 1/3. You want this to have the mouthpiece of a soda bottle with a long open bottom. It is slightly more helpful if this cut is smooth, so that you can set the top of your gravity bong down evenly when it's not actively being hit.
Preparing the Bowl
- Tinfoil square
- Bottle cap
- Thin pokey
The gravity bong bowl design is unique, it's a two-stage process where the bowl is removed right before you inhale. So, unlike a normal bong, the bowl and the mouthpiece share the same location.
To DIY a bowl, you'll want to make a small bowl-and-filter out of a piece of tinfoil. You can do this straight-up by just nestling some tinfoil into the water bottle mouthpiece and poking a few small holes in it. But the pros start by cutting a hole in the top of the bottle cap, then create a perforated foil bowl inside. Then the bottle cap can screw on and off as a secure way to add or remove your bowl from your new gravity bong.
Pro Tip: If you have a loose bong bowl and stem, you can also set this into the top of your bottle instead of using a DIY piece of foil.
Believe it or not, that's all it takes. Your gravity bong crafting is done. Now it's time to take it for a test-drive.
Loading Up the Gravity Bong
- Halfway fill the lower bottle with ice water
- Set the top bottle down into the water
- Load your leaf bowl into the top
The next step is knowing how to use your water bong. Start by filling the lower bottle about half-way to 2/3 high with ice water. A few ice cubes is all it takes to chill the smoke.
Next, set the upper bottle half down into the water, leaving only a small layer of air between the water level and the mouthpiece. This step is essential, and you'll soon see how the water level plays a role in the gravity of your gravity bong.
Set your foil-and-cap bowl onto the top. You may not want to screw it on - or wrap the cap-free foil too tight - as you'll be removing the bowl quickly to take your hit in just a moment.
How to Hit a Gravity Bong
Hitting a gravity bong is the really cool part of the whole process. A gravity bong doesn't just use water to filter the smoke, it uses water to draw in the smoke through the force of gravity and air pressure. You can hit any gravity bong with a simple 3-step process.
1. Lower and Load
Start with the upper half lowered into the water and the bowl loaded on top.
2. Light and Lift
Gently touch the flame to the bowl and then slowly raise the upper hallf of the gravity bong. As air is sucked through the bowl to fill the new not-water-filled vacancy in the bottle, it also draws smoke into the chamber.
3. Inhale and Lower
Now remove the bowl (this is why a cap is handy) and place your mouth over the mouthpiece. As you inhale, slowly lower the upper chamber, so the water level rises and pushes smoke out.
When you are done reeling from the excellent hit you have just created, give yourself a pat on the back. You just build and hit your own gravity bong.
